The Teams:
Albion's Bellies (formerly Belly's Boys): This team has been playing from the Albion pub in Stockbridge Road, by the Railway Station, for a few years now. Historically, they started as the Prince of Wales team and played there for a few years until it went bust. They then played for a few years from the Albion, where they renamed themselves after their mascot and then captain, 'Uncle Belly'. After the Albion went bust (do you see a trend here??), they played for a season from the White Swan, and then returned to the Albion when it re-opened. The current squad has meregd with the Worthies as the Albion went bust again (!?) and comprises Belly, Alistair, David, George, Max, Ashley and Brian, with occasional help from Sarah and Louis.
Arrested Development: All we know is that this is an all-female team from the St James... Winchester’s answer to the SugarBabes??
Atlas Lions: This team is formed out of the ol’ Golden Balls when they did a Wimbledon and split into two at the Golden Lion...
Coach & Horses (Sutton Scotney): Hailing from Sutton Scotney, this was their third season with us for these well-quizzed country folk... The main team comprises the 'Tipper Boys'; Norm, Steve, Lee, Alan and Ian, and are ably assisted by two firemen (steady girls!!), Cyril and Richard, and apparently if really pushed can call upon Mark or Lennie (Sutton Scotney's answer to 'SuperKev').
Eclipse Chasers: A formidable team playing from the Eclipse in the Square..
Golden Balls (formerly Itchen Allover): Carl’s left for the Lions but they used to play as one of the four teams based at the St James, but moved with Tim to the Golden Lion in Winnall, and offer mankind's best chance to scupper world domination by the Alfie... assuming they can spell on the night !! Mick Turner and Bob Rose are some of the longest surviving quiz league players in Winchester having won the league back in the ‘heady’ days of the Kings Head team! Penny, having just left for Devon has been suitably replaced by Guy and Alison, two ex-Newcastle University chums of Mick.
Golden Eclipse: See above, now playing from the Eclipse..
Jolly Green Giants (Green Man): Second season with us, and comprising some very sexy voices...
King Alfred: Playing from Hyde, this is the team to beat... Micheal, Jim and Steve are good enough in themselves, but add in 'SuperKev (Mastermind, Brain of Britain, Crimewatch UK) and they represent the league's equivalent of Chelsea... Just have a look at the 'Past Winners' page to see their illustrious past...although they lost a few times last season...
Mash Tun: Now a Tapas bar, they were a revitalised team following their takeover of the pub, they are sometimes complemented by the BBC's own Peter White, but not playing this season as Peter’s selling the pub......
Queen Inn: A new team for 2009/10, or are they??
Red Star St James: Playing out of the St James Tavern; this was the surprise team of last season, but can they maintain the St James's good performances - time will tell !!
St James Incredibles: One of the two teams based at the St James Tavern in Romsey Road, and formerly known as the St James B (boring name, well done for changing it !!)... Captained by the formidable Laurie, with regulars Diane, Sarah, Karen, Chris and Phil... this team have been playing for a few seasons now... The name derives from a fancy dress party at the St James, and if there's any doubters then apparently photographic evidence is available (but is it legal ??)
Trout: All the way from Itchen Abbas come the Trout, with one team this season from the two teams of previous seasons. Sometimes (if we're very lucky) Steve brings along their mascot, Tom, who should bring them good luck... I say should...
White Swan: Following the departure of the fat bloke to the Worthies, this former Albion team have re-formed and are up for a challenge. Watch out for these seasoned quizzers!
Wonston Arms: A new, and welcome team from South Wonston.
Worthies Club: Two teams from the village. The AllStars are basically the Committee who put every answer to a debate and a vote before finally guessing incorrectly, and the BarFlies who are a formidable array of talent, but sadly not for quizzing!! .
